The book explains old and new production techniques in typography. We worked with one of our typefaces, the "TpMartini", an interpretation of a neo-classical Antiqua, in order to make the book look neither too old or too modern. Additionally we let the typography emboss in a carton with canvas structure. The lively orange gave it a fresher appearance.

Their book Left, Right, Up, Down: New Directions in Signage und Wayfinding is just one exciting example of how the Barcelona-based couple combines intuition and ratio, the subjective and the objective, and the experimental with the traditional.

We trekked all the way up to the Catalan capital's mighty Montjuïc to chat about work that excites clients, work that hasn't been done before, and work that does more than just work.
Leaving three days of fever delirium behind, but packing my 38°C degree fever to take along, soaked into a never ending dizziness I find myself in a Taxi to Barcelona Airport, 30 minutes before the departure of my plane to Paris.

Barcelona, noisy as always yet so familiar and hospitable, is about to experience one of its most devastating storms in years. As if intuitive to what is about to happen, our plane escapes as fast as it can, shaken by winter clouds, jumping up and down through the cold cotton like world. It all seems a dream to me, moving like a movie I am watching, but not directing.

Paris - Charles de Gaulle is like landing in Terries “Brazil”. Lost in an 1980’s like science fiction movie scenery, no working bus service, no information, no signage nor direction, just mafia cab services and friendly French soldiers.

Antoine appears out of nothing, ready to create something exceptional, … and there it is again, the excitement of not knowing what is going to happen, entering a different delirium, a different cold cotton world.

It shows a schema to construct a gothic lower case letter. Following the logic of the lower case construction, but not the traditional upper case letters of the gothic, we designed the upper case letters. We repeated the "pixel" of the downstroke (the rotated square module) as often as we could to intensify a contemporean aesthetic. Result is a strong typeface with steady rhythm, working well as a display typeface or for short texts.
This book presents the unsung heroes of functional graphic design.

Left, Right, Up, Down presents current approaches to design that provide orientation in and around buildings. The book provides myriad examples that combine graphic design and architecture so well that the result elegantly meets the specific navigational needs of the situation. The range of attractive, experimental, low-budget, and flexible solutions make it an inspirational and insightful examination of current possibilities for practical applied information graphics.

When trying to get through masses of people quickly at a train station or airport to catch a connection, when looking for the right hospital ward in an emergency, or when simply navigating through large, unfamiliar buildings such as museums, convention centers, or parking garages, one urgently needs orientation. In such situations, signage systems help us find our way effectively in spite of stress, crowds, or circuitousness.

With a specialized ability to bring synthesis to complex problems, to work from conception to implementation, and to visualize complex relationships, the strategic designer plays a lead role in addressing the issues faced by contemporary society. Helsinki Design Lab (HDL), a project initiated by Sitra – The Finnish Innovation Fund – fosters state-of-the-art knowledge, capability, and achievement in the area of strategic design in order to improve global supply of this essential 21st century problem solving skill."
